125 years of National Geographic

Prompted by a desire to share their scientific interests, ideas, and findings, the 33 founders of the National Geographic Society first convened in Washington, DC on January 13, 1888 to create “a society for the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge.” Today, the Society works to inspire people to care about the planet.

In 2013, National Geographic is celebrating its 125th anniversary.

Throughout its history, the National Geographic Society has encouraged conservation and raised public awareness of the importance of natural places, the plants and wildlife that inhabit them and the environmental problems that threaten them.

Originally the Society did this through exploration, research, photography and the publication of their now-iconic journal, National Geographic. With early support from the likes of Alexander Graham Bell and the magazine’s first full-time editor, Gilbert H. Grosvenor, National Geographic has flourished as one of the world’s top names in geography, archaeology, natural science, ecology, world culture and history.

Today, National Geographic reflects the world around us through its magazines, television programs, films, music and radio, books, DVDs, exhibitions, live events, school publishing programs, interactive media and merchandise. The magazine is read by more than 60 million people each month, and the National Geographic Channel reaches 440 million households in 171 countries in 38 languages. Their digital media receives more than 20 million visitors a month. National Geographic has funded more than 10,000 scientific research, conservation and exploration projects and supports an education program promoting geographic literacy. American mapping

Last time I was writing about the excellent (if a bit geeky) maps produced by the USGS. However great its series are, they might be a bit too “raw” for casual users and, most importantly, unlike OS Explorer they don’t mark walking trails (this should change with the new editions where adding trails is planned, at least in areas administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Forrest Service and National Park Service). Some old 1:24,000 quadrangles show paths but they don’t indicate if there is a right of way along it. And we all know about US gun laws.

For trails you need the Trails Illustrated maps produced by the National Geographic. These are excellent walking maps with full topographic content but also marking trails, campgrounds, visitor centres, even toilets. They are also printed on waterproof plastic. Unfortunately they only cover national parks and some of the most popular national forests.

For National Forests not covered by the Trails Illustrated maps there is usually the possibility of obtaining maps produced by The United States Forest Service. Most of these maps are at a scale of 1:126,720 and many others are at scales such as 1:63,360, etc. These maps are famous for showing the numerous Forest Service back-country roads and they provide forest-wide information on attractions, facilities and services. However it is worth mentioning that many of those maps (especially the smaller scale ones) lack contour lines.

RandMcNallyInterestingly USDA Forest Service is also producing its own series of 1:24,000 quadrangles, called FS Topo. They are broadly similar to the US Topo series but they don’t contain the orthophoto image layer. Their advantage is that, unlike the US Topo series (at least so far), they do show trails as well as numbers for the forest roads. They can be downloaded for free as a Geo-enabled PDF file from the Forest Service website.

Now, a few words about road maps and general maps in America. There is of course a huge choice of road maps for the whole USA, its regions, states or even particular counties. There are so many of them that it is actually pointless to even try to list them here. Especially as most of them are quite average, nothing really to shout about.

One company worth mentioning is Rand McNally which publishes road atlases for the whole country, road maps for each state and city maps. It is one of the most well-known and oldest map makers in America. It produced its first map in 1872, it was published in its Railroad Guide. The first Rand McNally road map was published in 1904 and in 1917 the company was the first major publisher to embrace a system of numbered highways. In addition to creating maps with numbered roads, Rand McNally also erected many of the actual roadside highway signs. This system was subsequently adopted by state and federal highway authorities. So the pedigree is there, but its maps are no more or less accurate than any others.

DeLormeSome of my favourite road map publishers are GTR Mapping and Benchmark Maps. Both companies specialize in mapping western United States, in fact they don’t venture into the eastern half of the country at all. The best aspect of their maps is the fact that unlike most of the road maps in America they do show some topographic and landscape information.

For those for whom the road maps are not enough but who don’t want to embrace the slightly geeky world of the USGS maps there is one more option. Maine-based DeLorme produces a series of Recreational Atlases & Gazetteers for all the states. These excellent atlases feature detailed topographic maps for the entire state in handy atlas form. Each atlas features the most up-to-date road information for the state, from interstate highways to dirt logging roads (including names of the smallest lanes and numbers of the forest roads). The maps also show an abundance of geographic features and landmarks, information on places to go and things to do, all cross-referenced to the map. The scales vary depending on the state. For some of the smallest ones (likeConnecticutorRhode Island) it can be as large as 1:65,000 but most of the states fall into the 1:150,000 – 1:250,000 category. I love using them even if I don’t need all the detail they provide.

So this is US mapping in a nutshell.

C.J. Schüler – City Maps

What constitutes a city map, and what is it for? The two most familiar maps of London both originated in the 1930s: the diagrammatic Tube map devised by Harry Beck in 1933, and the pocket A-Z invented by Phyllis Pearsall in 1935. They are essential aids for Londoners and visitors attempting to navigate the metropolis, and most other large cities have their equivalents.

Antoine du Pinet's FlorenceBut city maps are almost as old as the city itself – and for much of history, they were not designed to help people find their way around. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, few cities were large enough to make that necessary. Despite its accuracy, the great marble map that hung in the Forum in Rome was not intended as a guide for visitors (they would have had to climb a ladder to read its upper portions) but to proclaim the imperial city’s prosperity and power.

From the clay tablets of the Babylonians to the latest satellite images, city maps have served a multiplicity of functions. They may come into existence as the work of surveyors and town planners before the actual cities they depict; they may delineate property ownership, express civic pride, or entertain the armchair traveller.

The first systematic collection of views of the world’s cities was Antoine du Pinet’sPlantz, pourtraitz et descriptions de plusieurs villes, printed in Lyon in 1563, using woodcuts to ‘show exclusively to the eye, in as lifelike a way as possible, the form, the position, the outskirts of the place’. United States Geological Survey(USGS) Mapping

I haven’t been in the US for more than half a year and I’m not going for another few months. But I’m not wasting my time. Instead I’m preparing another awesome trip for the autumn. At this stage I spend a lot of my free time studying maps thinking about future road-trips.

So, maps: let me share some thoughts about the subject.

US Topo

Obviously everyone is aware of Google maps. This is great tool for route planning. It calculates distances, driving times and lets you look at street level (useful when you are trying to work out how to exit unfamiliar airport parking or drive to a small motel hidden down a side street). But as much as I like Google, its mapping has some obvious limitations.

Probably the most important is the lack of contour lines or other topographic information. You really can’t work out how steep the road is or sometimes even if the terrain is flat or hilly. For that you need some proper topographic maps.

This is where the USGS comes in, which stands for the United States Geological Survey. Created by an act of congress in 1879 it is the agency of the United States government which studies landscape, geology, natural resources and natural hazards. Jerry Brotton: A History of the World in Twelve Maps

Jerry Brotton mapsJerry Brotton, Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary, University of London, delivered a talk at Stanfords on his latest book, A History Of The World In Twelve Maps.

A “massive shift” in the direction of mapping is underway, with cartography’s transformation to the digital sphere causing as profound a reaction as when maps moved from manuscripts to print – especially now the online map has become essential to web navigation and search.

This is according to A History Of The World In Twelve Maps author Jerry Brotton, who believes there are parallels between today’s anxieties surrounding online mapping and the attitudes of some in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the printing press suddenly allowed people en masse to have a visual appreciation the world around them.

But what is it about maps that touches the nerve of so many? And with maps now more ubiquitous than ever, what does the future of cartography have in store?

“People are fascinated about maps, and I want to explore why that might be by looking at a wider historical context,” Brotton explains. “What happens when you go back to the Greeks, or further, to see how maps have gone through different forms of representation? Firstly scratched on a cave wall, then moulded on clay, then drawn on papyrus, then paper, then print, then lithography, then online. I want to see what endures with mapping – what is it that makes us so fascinated?”

Babylonian World Map

This is the aim of A History Of The World In Twelve Maps, a book that takes 12 maps and asks whether there are abiding mapmaking principles that can be traced back to prehistoric times. The first, the Babylonian World Map, dates from 750 BC; the last, Google Earth, was updated in 2012.

“Interestingly, neither looks much like a map despite being at opposite ends of the historical scale,” Brotton says. “The Babylonian World Map – the first known surviving map of the entire world – has only recently been seen as an incredibly important object. When it was discovered, people didn’t know what it was. Google Earth, because it’s a sphere, doesn’t look like a map either.”

His book is about maps of the world – not local or regional maps – and how different historical cultures, from Europe to north Africa and south-east Asia, represented the planet in different ways. By looking beyond Greco, Roman and western traditions, Brotton was able to document lesser known but equally important mapping methods. He discovered that each approach was logical, consistent and coherent to its culture but that each, inevitably, had to make omissions.

“Any map of the world that attempts to transform the globe onto a flat piece of paper will also make distortions – quite simply, you cannot square the circle,” Brotton explains. “Choices and decisions will always be made about what will be put in and left out. I’m interested in what happened at this point – it opens up the possibility for prejudices, religious beliefs and political ideologies. I wanted to track how this happened.

Google Earth“Maps are a way of categorising the world – we look towards the horizon and wonder what’s out there. We want to abstract the world around us and make it understandable. We want to make it contained, and both the Babylonian World Map and Google Earth do this. While the latter is photo-real satellite imagery from above, once you click on or off the geopolitical boundaries it starts to become more abstract.

“Another striking parallel is the view of the world from above. Google Earth asks you to be 11,000 km above the Earth, as though you were in orbit. The Babylonian map does the same – by providing access to this view, you’re offered a divine perspective of the Earth. But as we all know, the first thing people do on Google Earth is find where they live and zoom straight in.”

World maps, then, have always responded to humans’ basic existential questions: Where am I? Why am I here? What am I doing here? “We ask the map to answer these questions for us,” Brotton continues. “Google is clever enough to know where you are so it will tilt the globe to make sure you’re at the centre of it. The Babylonian map does exactly the same thing – it’s the whole world, surrounded by the ocean. The idea is that the Earth is round, but it’s also flat. At its centre is Babel, or Babylon. Babylon is the centre of the world, everything beyond it is immaterial. There’s an enduring power in that image, which takes us all the way through to Google Earth.”

Between the Babylonian World Map and Google Earth, Brotton has compiled a collection of other important maps and publications, from Ptolemy’s Geographia to the Peters’ projection via the Hereford Mappa Mundi and the Mercator projection.

“What he basically concluded is that you can’t accurately map the world; that you have to make certain compromises and decide what you want on your maps. His basic grid served as a toolkit for how to take things forward. It was additive – if more land was discovered, it could simply be added in.”

On Islamic maps:

“An Islamic world map from 1086 had south at the top. Why? The Arabian Peninsula was the key inclusion – Mecca was the centre of this world. In the 10th and 11th centuries, cultures that converted to Islam were due north, so they would understand Mecca as being due absolute south. This was a theological response to how to represent the world rather than being about geometry or maps.”

On the Hereford Mappa Mundi:

“It’s a weird, amazing object made from an enormous calf skin – it’s literally a rumpled dead animal, and really the equivalent of the Islamic theological roll map. It has east at the top with the Garden of Eden. Right at the centre of the map is Jerusalem, with the idea that theological Christian time starts in the east and moves westward, with the surrounding legend describing scenes from the bible. Everything is moving westwards – this is a map about time, not space. Rather than being about finding your way from A to B, it’s about finding your way from the terrible sinful world you’re in to heaven.”

On the emergence of Chinese maps:

“In China, the emperor always faces the south. In subjection to the emperor, you look to the north. That’s why Chinese maps have traditionally had north at the top, a trend that began not long after the Islamic and Hereford theological world maps, both in China and Korea.”

On the first maps of the New World:

“Martin Waldseemüller’s map of the world from 1507 was the first to put the name ‘America’ on a separate continent surrounded by sea. Vespucci [who first demonstrated that America was a separate landmass] is seen looking down at his new continent, while Ptolemy is depicted glancing down at his old world. The map contains a weird distortion – America almost looks like a wedge of cheese with its unrealistic coastline, though what’s happened is consistent with how the world is projected. It has to be stretched and elongated to accommodate the new continent.”

On the Mercator projection:

“The distortion in Waldseemüller’s map is why you get Mercator and his very famous 1569 new projection. He called for a rectangular map to plot the spherical globe so cartography could move on from the days of Ptolemy. He knew that compromises had to be made – the image of the globe was stretched north-south until the North and South Poles were stretched to infinity. He was very open about this distortion, but because trade travelled east to west rather than north and south, it didn’t really matter.”

On the Peters projection:

“Peters’ world projection from the early 1970s, which is all about equality, is the big challenge to Mercator. A socialist historian, he argued that Mercator’s map massively privileges the developed northern world as opposed to, say, Africa. He championed equality of landmass, though his map wasn’t universally welcomed. Somebody once famously said the continents resembled long, wet ragged pieces of underwear hanging off the North Pole.”

On Google:

“I was initially absolutely seduced by what they were doing. But Google’s innovative use of mapping has become about monetising geography, and this is my big concern. Over one third of all Google searches have some geographical content to them – Where is my nearest Chinese restaurant? Where is the best hotel in Madrid? – which has seen the online map become an actionable platform for selling things.”

Digital mapping on mobile phones

Mobile phoneHere at Stanfords we use all types of mapping, and recently, we’ve become rather taken with digital mapping. Here, digital mapping specialist Craig Wareham makes the case for one of the latest developments for walkers – digital mapping on mobile phones.

Maps have leapt from the page and onto websites such as the AA’s route planner, Google Maps and Microsoft’s Virtual Earth, to name but three. These have made digital maps widely available and often at no cost. However, while these services are of undoubted value for road-users, they lack the rich layers of information required by walkers, mountain-bikers, horse-riders and other ‘off-road’ users, who are used to relying on Ordnance Survey (OS) maps in all their glorious detail. Getmapping's groundbreaking project

GetmappingNot since William the Conqueror recorded England in the Domesday Book has there ever been such a record of the country. A record that is so detailed as to show every road, every house, and every tree – the first ever complete and continuous colour aerial photographic record.

To set about the collection of such a data set is no ordinary task. The flight planning alone was groundbreaking in its enormity. Four specially modified aircraft are on constant standby waiting clear weather and Air Traffic control permission, each one fitted with a large format forward motion compensating camera. To date over 800 hours of flying have been completed using some 54km of film!

Not content with simply photographing the whole country, Getmapping have used the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) network to give them the accuracy to overlap each image by 60%. This process results in the production of stereo pairs of photographs, needed for certain types of photogrammetry and 3D viewing.

With the photography in the can, Getmapping then undertook to digitise and geo-correct the image, a process that removes all optical distortion from the images and ensures a perfect match to conventional mapping. To date some 200,000 man-hours have been invested in the project, resulting in a data set of over 20 terabytes. But a data set of this size brings its own problems. To understand the size, perhaps one should imagine that if one byte of information weighed a gram, then 20 terabytes would be equivalent to 8 fully loaded super tankers!

With these technical processes complete, there are of course the aesthetic issues to address, not least of which is ensuring a constant colour balance across the entire country. With the data collected over an extended period this is no mean feat but with the wonders of modern technology and the expertise of the Getmapping team the results are truly amazing. As you look through the pages of “England, the photographic atlas” you move seamlessly across the country from major city to secluded beauty spot, you trace journeys you have taken, and see the effect mankind has had on our landscape. You see the country as never before.

Stanfords supplied a UK designer-artist with Stanfords Map of London 1951 for experimental pieces of artwork, now shown in a summer exhibition.

The exhibition, a collaboration between artist Samantha Neal and framer Gary Townsend, is named In a Flutter, and showed beautifully arranged and framed laser-cut card pieces, ranging from Samantha’s original butterfly configuration, through botanical arrangements, love hearts and birds.

Maps in literature

Maps in LiteratureWe get a thrill whenever we come across descriptions of the wonders of maps in the world of literature. It all started for us with the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who in The Hound of the Baskervilles has Sherlock Holmes describing the transporting power of a map, and even referring to Stanfords by name as his chosen source of cartographic inspiration.

Here we’ll be sharing some of the many fascinating stories in our rich history, as we discover more.

Cabinet War Rooms

Stanfords’ maps played an important role in World War II – many of the maps used by Churchill and his administration in the Cabinet War Rooms in London’s Westminster were produced by Edward Stanford Ltd.

To this day, visitors to the museum of the rooms – preserved as they were left on the last day of the war – can see our map of south-east Asia on the wall of the Map Room. And there are many more – the museum curator lists no less than 28 maps published by Stanfords – all to be found in the map chests’ drawers. Continue reading Stanfords Stories
