Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is different from all the other islands in the Canaries. It’s beautiful barren landscapes and sparse population (only 60,000 people) make it an ideal choice for sun-searchers looking for something a little quieter. Sadly the island isn’t a complete haven of solitude, as there are also “touristy” areas; the towns of Corralejo and Morro Jable in particular are popular destinations for British and German tourists. Taking that into account it is easy enough to escape these areas thanks to the cheap reliable bus services and abundant car hire shops.

On escaping the crowds your first destination should be the beach, and the choice is both rich and plentiful. Beautiful white beaches often isolated by large “Sahara-like” sand dunes line the east side of the island, and many of these are also perfect for water sports (in particular wind and kite surfing) due to the reliable offshore winds and calm seas.

The beaches of the west coast strike a dramatic contrast to those of the east. Instead of golden white sand you’ll find the dark grey pebbles that have become synonimous with the Canary Isles.

Garcey Beach on the south-west of the island is definitely worth a visit. Having travelled for half an hour down a desolate dirt track one is presented with astonishing views of a giant shipwreck marooned only metres from the shore. The rusting American Star cruise liner cuts a dramatic contrast to the raw beauty of the place and it is a popular meeting point for local surfers who enjoy the cove’s fearsome waves.

The inland is made of sprawling scrub land and giant igneous mountains (Gran Montana in particular has stunning vistas) which are all easily accessible through the island’s fantastic new roads.

I found the Sunflower guide to Fuerteventura an ideal companion on the island. It clearly highlights the Fuerteventura’s key features and locations and it also comes with useful maps for driving and walking even through the areas harder to find.
