For over twenty years, the Bradt Guides ‘New Travel Writer of the Year’ competition has been seeking out and championing new writing talent. Previous winners and finalists in the competition have gone on to see their work published in newspapers, travel magazines and books.

The theme for this year’s competition was Beneath the Surface. Entrants were invited to submit an original piece of writing of between 600 and 800 words that focuses on this topic.
Shortlist to be announced at the end of January, date TBC. The winner will be announced at the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards on the 16th March 2023.
The overall winner of New Travel Writer of the Year will win a three-night stay for two people on the West Iceland Escape trip at Glacier Lodge, sponsored by Discover the World and Play. They will be commissioned to write an article about their trip for Wexas Traveller magazine as well as the Bradt and Discover the World websites.

Ghar Ghosts by Ruth Cox received the Bradt Travel Guides 2022 New Travel Writer of the Year. The freelance educational materials editor fought off tough competition in this popular unpublished award category.
