It’s probably down to wonderful parenting that you’ve become the well read, adventurous soul you are today. We know you’ve been brought up well enough to not need reminding that this Sunday is Mothers’ Day, but we thought we’d give you some suggestions anyway. Our Marketing Manager, Jude Brosnan has selected five books from our Be More Adventuress promotion that your mum might like.
Extreme Sleeps by Phoebe Smith

Nothing brings my mother more joy than hearing I’ve had trouble sleeping. If I phone her complaining of being tired because there were foxes ‘fighting’ outside my window all night, she replies, “Good. I didn’t sleep for years because of you kids.” Less about actually sleeping, this collection of tales from Phoebe Smith is about the outdoor adventures that are available in the UK.
Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle by Dervla Murphy

Dervla Murphy is a cycling icon and I am in constant awe of her strength and determination. As if being a ten year-old girl in 1940s Lismore, County Waterford with dreams of cycling to India wasn’t bold enough, actually executing the trip 21 years later as a lone woman on her bicycle in 1963 was beyond bold. This book gives a great insight into the political state of affairs in the 1960s and shows what an adventurous life can result from giving a ten-year-old child a bicycle and an atlas.
Around India in 80 Trains by Monica Rajesh

India’s railway network is very impressive and there is something just so romantic about travelling across a country by train. The railway networks of India lend themselves as a great setting for this book. Monica Rajesh’s writing is really funny and her journalistic background offers a very informed perspective. Her childhood memories of India are very different to her experiences as a tourist attempting to get around India using a varied array of trains.
Revolutionary Ride By Lois Pryce

Lois Pryce is awesome and Revolutionary Ride has been one of our most popular new books this year. It’s the story about her experiences of solo motorcycling through Iran. It’s funny and paints a beautiful picture of hospitality and if you can read it without craving Persian food, you are stronger than me.
I do a lot of solo touring on a bicycle and when I’m on the road my mother insists I tell her where I am heading every day and I have to call her as soon as I get there or I’ll feel her wrath (I’m 34). I want Lois to come with me when I tell my mum I’m thinking of getting a motorbike.
The Virago Book of Women Travellers

In the introduction, Mary Morris talks about how until later in the 20th century, women’s literature was, by large, about women denied of freedom waiting for love. This collection celebrates the women who ventured away from expectations and began travelling and having their own adventures. It contains biographies and extracts of the greats including Gertrude Bell, Freya Stark, Beryl Markham, Dervla Murphy and many more. This is a great one to dip in and out of if you are pressed for time.
All these books are included on our buy one get one half price Be More Adventuress offer celebrating inspirational women. Offer ends 10th April.
