May the 4th be with you: Star Wars and Mars Maps

Star Wars street viewToday we will mostly be planning our routes using Star Wars Street View. You can look at the world from inside The Millennium Falcon, Darth Vader’s Tie Fighter or Luke’s X-Wing. Hours of fun!

OS Mars Map

Coincidentally, with all of this ‘galaxy far far away’ talk, we’ve had our very own out of this world delivery as we received the Limited Edition Ordnance Survey Map of Mars, Western Arabia Terra Wall Map. The guys in our map room are big Star Wars fans so adding the map of Mars to today’s ‘May the 4th be with you’ excitement has made it their favourite day ever.

This topographical basemap is Ordnance Survey’s first foray into space mapping and it was created by OS Cartographer Chris Wesson using NASA open data.

It shows lots of facinating cartographic details including dry channels thought to be carved by water, hill shading and craters are named. If you are a fan of the film The Martian, this map covers the direct route that Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon) took including Schiaparelli, where he set off from. Every inch on this map represents roughly 25 miles.
