London is often regarded as an expensive city however if you know the right places to go you will find that there are plenty of free activities & sites around the city. Most of the museums have free entry and there are many beautiful open spaces to wander around as well as river walks and bike routes. Below are our top 10 free things to do in London…

Trafalgar Square: At the heart of the city, Trafalgar Square is one of London’s most famous attractions. At its centre stands the historic Nelson’s Column guarded by four bronze lions. The square is home to The National Gallery and St. Martin-in-the-Fields which are well worth a visit. Many free events take place in the iconic square throughout the year from street performances and musical events to cultural celebrations and parades.  The square is easily accessible from Charing Cross station, Leicester Square and is a few minutes walk from Embankment station.

Covent Garden: Covent Garden is one of London’s most exciting shopping areas and home to the Royal Opera House. Designed in the 1600’s, the historic market in Covent Garden Piazza is one of London’s most visited attractions and with exciting street performances, an array of fine restaurants and boutique shops on offer its not difficult to see why.

Natural History Museum: Located in a stunning Victorian building in South Kensington, this fascinating museum is home to hundreds of exciting exhibits including the famous dinosaur skeletons. Entry is free however there is a charge for some of the temporary exhibitions. 

Tate Museum: Part of the Tate Gallery network, The Tate Britain is the largest collection of British art in the world showcasing work from some of Britain’s finest artists including JMW Turner, Hogarth and Constable. The Tate Modern, one of London’s most popular attractions is a fascinating collection of international modern art. 

Borough Market: One of London’s best known food markets, Borough Market is a culinary spectacle selling gourmet food from all over the country.

Richmond Park: The largest open space in London spread over 1,000 hectares, Richmond Park is a beautiful place to visit and escape from the bustle of the big city and is home to fascinating wildlife. Herds of deer roam the park and there are plenty of spots to take a break and enjoy a picnic.

South Bank: Strolling along South Bank is a wonderful way to spend the day and a great way to see some of the most popular sites including The London Eye, Big Ben and the Jubilee Gardens whilst on the river Thames.

Changing of the Guard: This historic ceremony involves a new guard changing duty with the former guard on duty which takes place at Buckingham Palace. It takes place every weekday at 11am during the summer months.

Houses of Parliament: Located in Westminster, the Houses of Parliament consisting of The House of Lords and The House of Commons, is also home to the iconic Big Ben. There are tours inside the Houses of Parliament every Saturday.

St. James’s Park: The oldest Royal Park in London and close to Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Park is a beautiful spot to take a break from walking around the city. Look out for the pelicans on the lake.
