A rare antique map being used as a draft excluder, a new ice hotel that is open all year and a map that shows what lies directly across the ocean. It’s this week’s travel news.

Rare antique map found up a chimney in Aberdeen

A rare 17th century map was found stuffed up a chimney during a house renovation in Aberdeen. The 2.2 x 1.6 meter map is being renovated by the National Library of Scotland. The map is thought to be one of three surviving maps by Dutch engraver Gerald Valdck. After many years being used as a draft excluder, the map was in awful condition so the conservation process will take some time. In the meantime, let’s all check our chimneys.

Icehotel 365 opens in Sweden

Map shows what lies directly across the ocean

A map created by cartographer Esri UK, shows what lies on the other side of the ocean from shoreline to shoreline. For example, 4,886 miles from Shetland, Scotland is the Dominican Republic. Esri have plotted 2,000 viewpoints along British shores.
