Are you worried that Christmas begins earlier every year and that Halloween and Christmas might merge into a frightening festive hybrid? Spare a thought for people who live in places where some rather terrifying Christmas traditions are honoured. There is Austria and the legend of Krampus a devil like anti-Santa, the evil goblin Kallikantzaroi of Greece who wreaks havoc during the festive season and the ghost of Danny in South Africa, a boy who was beaten to death for eating the cookies that were left for Santa. Traveller pays his way in beer

A hitchhiker has made it to India from Scotland using beer in exchange for rides and accommodation. Manny Marshall accepted the challenge from the brewer Innes and Gunn to travel 5,000 miles using their beer as currency. It’s certainly one way to make friends while travelling.

Delicious deep fried wasps

Wasp larvae are sold at roadside stalls in eastern Myanmar. Fried up with ginger and chilli, apparently the head is crunchy and the body is juicy. Wash down with some wasp infused rice wine. Anyone?

£4 folding cycling helmet wins award

Seeing as we have a penchant for things that can be folded and don’t take up much room in a bag, we are already big fans of this design. The EcoHelmet by New York designer Isis Shiffer has won the James Dyson award. It is made from cardboard in a honeycomb concertina style structure.
