Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) Journey of a Lifetime Award

Every year since 2001, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), in partnership with BBC Radio 4, has enabled someone’s dream travel project to come true.

Whether it’s reporting on conservation in the jungles of Sierra Leone, experiencing life on one of the remotest islands in the world, or searching for the tigers of the Sundarbans forest, the Journey of a Lifetime Award aims to support informed travel and discover new radio talent.

This year, professional musician Nina Plapp travels to Transylvania and Rajasthan to trace the roots of Roma music. Travelling with a cello, Nina meets the Roma people and the desert nomads and immerses herself in their rich musical culture. Nina recorded her journey for a BBC Radio 4 documentary that will be broadcast at 11.00am on Friday 21 October 2016.

The Journey of a Lifetime Award offers a £5,000 grant for an original and inspiring journey, and the chance to record your experiences for a BBC Radio 4 documentary. If you have a curiosity about the world and an enthusiasm to share your discoveries with others through the medium of radio, see Journey of a Lifetime to apply.
